Spyderco Para 3 A faithful companionMost major knife manufacturers have developed their classics over the years, which are simply indispensable from the program. Spyderco's Para Military 2 is one of them, along with several other models. But for some, this folding knife is a bit too big for everyday use, especially since there is a legal regulation in some US states that only allows blades up to a length of 3 inches. Spyderco have therefore put the PM2 on a diet and the result can now be admired in the form of the Para 3. Well, it's not quite that simple - after all, the Para 3 is much more than just a shrunken version of the classic.Despite the significantly smaller dimensions, the Para 3 also feels absolutely fantastic in the hand, especially when you use the finger choil at the base of the blade. This indentation allows one to guide the knife very close to the cutting edge and thus be able to transfer a lot of force to the cutting motion. The Compression Lock, which at first glance looks like a liner lock attached to the back, provides maximum security through its locking technology, which is due to the fact that here (unlike the liner lock) a part of the plate is pushed between the blade root and the stop pin. So to destroy the lock, the vertically positioned liner would have to be crushed between the blade and the pin, which is virtually impossible. The fully raised flat grind of the blade, which is made of CPM S45V steel, ensures optimal cutting performance and the fine tapered tip also allows for the most precise work. The blade length of exactly 3inches (hence the name of the knife) is still long enough to handle the vast majority of everyday cutting tasks with ease, yet still makes for a much more compact overall package compared to the Para Military 2. Together with the large lanyard hole and the reversible poket clip (making the knife perfectly suitable for left-handers), you get a really robust yet handy pocket knife with the Para 3, which proves to be an absolutely faithful companion in everyday life.

The Para Military 2 - or PM2 - is one of the most popular and versatile knives Spyderco has in its lineup. Originally introduced in 2010, this all-around knife has been improved upon over the years, making this cutting tool an absolutely mature design by now. The incredibly ergonomically shaped handle, is designed for maximum control when working with the knife and allows a variety of ways to guide the blade. Really great is the fingerchoil (an indentation at the base of the blade), which makes it possible to grip the knife very close to the cutting edge to transmit maximum force to the cutting movement. Thanks to the attached filing (jimping), you have an absolutely secure grip even in this position and the knife never threatens to slip away thanks to the gray G10 surface of the handle. The steel plates are recessed into the handle material and generously milled out to save weight. An absolute highlight of the PM2s is the Compression Lock. At first glance, this locking technology looks like a liner lock placed at the rear - but a closer look reveals that it is not. With Compression Lock, the liner moves between the blade root and the back stop pin. To destroy this lock, the steel liner would have to be squashed between the blade root and the pin, which is virtually impossible. This construction makes the Para Military 2 one of the most stable pocket knives on the market. In this version of the knife, the blade is made of the rather unusual Maxamet steel. This is a high-speed tool steel manufactured by Carpenter in the USA, which is not only impressively sharp thanks to its incredibly high carbon content, but also incredibly hard due to the composition of the alloy. Spyderco has a hardness of over 67 HRC, which is an incredibly high value in the pocket knife world. The result is a blade whose cutting edge has a very long service life and remains sharp for an amazingly long time. The fully raised flat grind ensures optimum cutting performance and the fine point allows even the finest detail work. Thanks to the reversible pocket clip on both sides, the knife is ideal for both right- and left-handed users, while the large lanyard hole allows a safety strap to be attached.

Since the Sage series has always been a sort of homage to a wide variety of lock systems, the choice of this model comes as no surprise. However, instead of simply bringing an old model back into the lineup, Spyderco have given the Sage 1 a proper steel update. The gray G10 handle scales already indicate it: the legendary CarTech Maxamet steel is used here. This is one of the most modern, powder-metallurgical steels that the market currently has to offer. With a carbide volume of a whopping 22 percent and a carbon content of 2.5 percent (here one could actually already discuss whether this material is still steel by definition), this material is truly impressive. Thus, Maxamet is hardened by Spyderco to up to 69 HRC, which ensures that the cutting edge still remains sharp even after endless cuts. Accordingly, re-sharpening (if it should ever be necessary) requires a little more patience. To protect the blade from rust, we recommend cleaning the steel with a little oil now and then. The handle is equipped with Spyderco's typical G10 handle scales, which were chosen in a light gray for this version. The polished and drilled steel liners provide the necessary stability of the knife and also represent the very secure locking liner lock. The deep-carry wire clip allows the Sage 1 to disappear inconspicuously in your pocket. Thanks to the flat design of the knife and the low weight, this knife is a fantastic EDC tool.
